An IBAN is valid when its length fits the country, the account part matches the country format, and the check digits pass the mod-97 test. This page checks all three in your browser and sends the IBAN nowhere.
The check digits make the whole IBAN leave a remainder of 1 when divided by 97.

Worked example
GB82 WEST 1234 5698 7654 32 is a valid UK IBAN: 22 characters, four letters for the bank, then 14 digits, and the check digits 82 make the mod-97 remainder 1.
Change one digit, GB82 WEST 1234 5698 7654 33, and the check digits no longer match. The checker knows the length and format for 101 IBAN countries and territories.

What a valid IBAN tells you
That it is well formed: no missing or extra characters, and almost every single typo or swapped pair is caught by the check digits. It does not tell you that the account is open or whose it is. Before a large first payment, confirm the account holder's name with the client by another channel.
Why we do not show the bank name
Bank names come from bank directories. The complete ones are licensed and paid, and the free national lists cover only a few countries. Rather than show a bank for some IBANs and guess for others, this page shows none.
Countries without IBAN
The United States, Canada, Australia, Armenia, Uzbekistan and many others do not use IBAN. For a payment there you need the account number and the bank's SWIFT / BIC code, and in the US a routing number.

No. It means the number is well formed. Only the bank knows whether the account is open and who holds it.
How long is an IBAN?
It depends on the country: 15 characters in Norway, 22 in Germany, the United Kingdom and Georgia, 20 in Kazakhstan, 27 in France and Italy, up to 33 in Russia.
Can it show the bank name?
No. There is no free, licensed list of banks for every IBAN country, so the page does not guess one.
